With a lot of companies and business already on the bandwagon of connected things, IoT is not a new technological trend anymore. The technology behind the connected device while connecting everything around us to the internet has transformed our life to good. With the expected growth of 19 per cent every year, the IoT market has the potential to reach $ 3.6trillion in 2025.

Today sensing the opportunities, many business and companies are working together with the emerging technology to help them become more sustainable, resilient and efficient. Below mentioned are several ways how IoT can contribute to creating a sustainable environment for us.

Smart waste management: e-waste (electronic waste) is a global concern for companies and cities all over the world. the disposal of these waste including cell phones, smart appliances, Television or other equipment when they become lifeless, they are immediately discarded.  This discarded electronic waste, when disposed and not being reused is the crucial component that affects environmental and corporate sustainability.

However, with the idea of connected devices, manufacture can trace these products with their inbuilt sensors and use the opportunity to recycle and repair, saving the cost of production and boosting environment sustainability.

Smart grid system: the connected devices are integrated with the sensors to monitor every process, this feature allows companies to manage the energy distribution and reroute its flow during downtime. The smart grid system also tracks supply and demand, by gathering data of energy consumption and applying them to network. Thus, offering greater efficiency and sustainability to energy grids providing the providers with an opportunity to preserve energy at downtime and delivering them when demand is high.

Smart meters: IoT powered smart meters are an integral part of the smart grid infrastructure. Here the sensors connected to the meters allows gathering of data at the real time.  So no need to wait for an electronically generated bills every month, with smart meters you get access to real-time information of usage, either it is energy, water or gas consumption. The concept offers better sustainability by reducing the cost of maintenance, increasing efficiency, and carbon footprints.

Connected transport: transportation industry has been already impacted with the IoT technology which is streamlining the PROCESS and improving customer experience. With the growing need for efficient, safe transportation services, IoT technology allows the collection of real-time data to boost their efficiency. The integration of IoT into transportation system adds various benefits including traceability of device at multiple locations, improving operational efficiency and greater personalization.
